FINGER SPACERS – A WRITING TOOL TO HELP STUDENTS WRITE EFFECTIVELY.
Keep just the right space between letters and words using this finger spacer writing tool.
Learning to write is tough. There are so many things to remember.
“Begin with a capital letter”.
“End with a full stop”.
“Leaves spaces in between your words”.
How can finger spacers help improve writing?
When students learn to write it is necessary to teach them to leave spaces between their words. This is one of the three components of effective handwriting. Spacing is the final component to focus on, after letter formation and size. Why do we need to focus on spacing? So that we know where a word begins and ends. This also makes it easier for the reader to read the writing. Proper spacing includes both spacings between letters and spacing between words. The space between each letter in a word should be the same. A great way to do this is to use something to mimic a finger to leave a space.
My Finger Spacers writing tool provides students with a tactile tool to utilise when writing. They can be used as a visual cue on how much space to leave between letters and words when writing. The text also provides a reminder for students to check their writing.
Technology means we don’t need fingers spacers.
While many classrooms are utilising technology more, it is important we still teach handwriting. It is a practical skill. We know that the brain retains more information when it is written, as opposed to being typed. Strong handwriting skills have also been linked to strong reading and spelling skills. Students with strong handwriting skills tend to be more creative and are able to show their creative processes in various subjects.
